Confused between BBA or BCA…?

After 10+2, there are only a few job-oriented courses offered. Among these, two courses have become popular – BBA and BCA – as they lead to a good career path and have excellent placement opportunities. Often students become confused between the two and cannot make up their minds regarding which of these to pursue.

Field of Study

BBA or Bachelor of Business Administration aims at education in business, commerce, and management. It allows students to specialize in areas such as international business, finance, real estate, computer information systems, marketing, accounting and more.

BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) often considered equivalent to BE or B.Tech in Computer Science deals with Computer Science and Information Technology domains. It includes knowledge of software development, hardware, and computer networking.  


Both BBA and BCA are generally of 3 years duration. They have a yearly or semester pattern, depending on the institution.


BBA typically includes the following subjects (not an exhaustive list): Principles of Management, Human Resource Management, Business Communication, Managerial Economics, Management Accounting, Business Law, Computer Applications, Operations Management, Marketing Management, International Marketing, Market Research, Project Management, and Rural management.

BCA subjects typically included are(not exhaustive list): Foundational Mathematics, Statistics, Operating Systems, Computer Fundamentals, Data Structures, Programming Using C, Introductory Algebra, Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Programming In Java, Database Management Systems, Object Oriented Programming Using C++, Web Technology, Oracle, Unix Programming, Client-Server Computing, Computer Architecture, Graphics And Animation, Cloud Computing, Multimedia Applications, Business Intelligence and Web Designing.


BBA graduate can get medium- to entry-level positions in national and multi-national Corporates, Small-Medium Enterprises or gives the tools to become an Entrepreneur. Graduates can look for jobs in Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operations Management or Finance, among other areas. Graduates usually require an MBA after some time to move up the corporate ladder.

BCA Graduates can get roles in a variety of domains as Systems Engineer, Software Developer, Web Designer, Junior Programmer, System Administrator, Software Tester, Systems Analyst and more. For future growth, having M.Sc. (Information Technology) or MCA (Masters in Computer Applications) degree offers an advantage in career growth.

Skills Required

A career in Management after BBA requires soft skills such as good communication, teamwork, negotiating and ability to handle deadlines.  They also need good leadership, planning, decision-making, and motivational skills.

A BCA graduate needs to have good coding/programming skills, logical and analytical aptitude, ability to work alone or in teams and understanding of both technical and business aspects.

So depending on your skills set, preferred subjects, the field of study and career plan, you can weigh the pros & cons of these two courses and decide the best course of action.
